SANDRA KJELLMAN

STRAP BASKETS

Assignment provided by the Swedish construction company NCC AB. The brief was to create products out of the construction straps used to lift beams and other heavy materials.

The straps can only be used once before being disposed of due to the reduced reliability after usage, leading to a grand volume of waste.

The contribution I made was to create a variety of baskets. These are two of them.

WOODEN

SYMPHONY

A pendant made by five old wooden lamps, thrifted brass screws and nails and an old IKEA buareu in pinewood.

Painted with a mixture of black pigment and coffee to promote an eco-friendly alternative to conventional paint.

To reasure a safe product in regards of electricity, all cable from the old lamps were replaced, energy efficient light sources were added as well as new lamp sockets, a junction box and a power switch, resulting in a new product with a long life length.

There are endless possibilities of upcycling and recycle design.

However, it’s still important to figure out whether the possible negative impact the new product will have in the future is worth the extention of its current life length.
